DOWNTOWN
WEST
COMPETITION
Atlanta, GA
Client: Friendship Baptist Church + The Peebles Corporation

Friendship Baptist Church sits at an opportune location in Atlanta, bookended by the western boundary of downtown, diagonally across from the Mercedes Benz Stadium and Atlanta’s five historic black universities. The Church wishes to develop its holding of 19 acres to create a new model of neighborhood development, Live-Collaborate-Enjoy.

THE FRONT PORCH TO PROSPERITY AND COMMUNITY
A dynamic mixed-use program program was proposed during the competition including several types of housing (faculty, mixed-income, market-rate, independent living, assisted living, and family), office, and a hotel looking to spur prosperity for and within the neighborhood. The project seeks to connect the cultural heritage of West Atlanta and the HBUs to downtown.

PUBLIC SPACE, PUBLIC PROGRAMMING
A series of public spaces welcome visitors and residents alike, beginning with the Front Porch that weaves through the site and traverses 56 feet of grade. They anchor gatherings of all sizes. Multiple activity zones are located along the street edges, encouraging users to enter the development while creating safe “eyes on the street” throughout the day.
